Ride for Rob

On June 19, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford finished his much-publicized weight-loss challenge. His ‘Cut the Waist Challenge’ was a good way to raise awareness of the medical perils associated with being overweight. But his personal result was less than inspiring. Over the course of 6 months he lost a mere 18 pounds.

Perhaps if he rode a bike to work he would have fared better.

It’s unlikely that Rob Ford will ever get on a bicycle. But with RideForRob.com, Dukes’s Cycle has done just that.

RideForRob.com—created by Canadian Ad Agency DentsuBos—features an animated Rob Ford, pedaling a bike. Toronto riders can ‘donate’ their bike commute to his waistline. Over time, and with each ‘donation,’ the Rob Ford avatar becomes more and more fit.

Since 1914, Duke’s Cycle has been dedicated to the local cycling community. The intent of RideForRob.com is to demonstrate the fitness benefits of bicycling in the city. Health Canada recommends 30 to 60 minutes of cardiovascular exercise daily. A bicycle commute usually meets this.

Join us for a Ride

We’ve been talking about this for the last little while… so its about time we got things going. Starting on Wednesday, June the 13th, we’ll be doing Duke’s Cycle Shop rides. Our plan is to try and offer at least two rides per week on the following schedule…

Wednesday Evening Road Rides: 6:00pm. These rides will start at the shop and will be planned around a 2 hour ride. It is our intention to make these rides a social opportunity as well and a chance to work on fitness and group road riding technique. Pace will be fun and social.

Sunday Morning MTB Rides: 8:00am. These rides will be starting at the Bayview / Pottery Road entrance to the Don Valley MTB Trails. Pace will be fun and social.

Throughout the summer, we’ll also be featuring several special rides with members of our Duke’s Cycle Cannondale LapDogs Race Team, local Reps [Cannondale, Cervelo, Trek, etc.] and a few other surprises. Yeah… we may even get Gary Duke out on a ride or two.

Be sure to checkout and “LIKE” our Duke’s Cycle Facebook page for all the latest Duke’s Cycle Shop Ride updates, details, times, locations, etc.

BTW: Helmets are manditory, no exceptions. Please be sure that your bike is in good working order. If not… maybe its time for a tune-up.

Yikes on Bikes

Duke’s Cycle is very pleased to be one the host galleries for the 2012 Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival.

We will be featuring a unique exhibit from local photographer, Mark Ridout.

Yike on Bikes is a lighthearted series about little kids biking treacherous hills and eating dirt. This series was inspired by his little boy’s misadventures on a local BMX dirt track.

Our opening evening takes place on Thursday, May the 3rd, starting @ 6:00, with the exhibit running for the entire month of May.

The attend the opening evening, please visit our Facebook Event Page to RSVP and let us know you are planning dropping by.

Welcome to the new www.dukescycle.ca

To say that we are long overdue for a new website is certainly an understatement of monumental proportions.

We originally began to look at this exercise back in the very early days of 2008… and just as we begin the thought process of wondering what kind of new website we wanted to build… disaster struck and we lost Duke’s Cycle in the Queen Street fire.

Needless to say in the subsequent years our efforts and energies became a little more single-minded… our only efforts were focused on rebuilding the business and our beloved shop.

Which brings us to the present.

We now have a fantastic new facility, back home on Queen Street. And, thanks to our partners at AdPioneers, we now have a fantastic new website that is reflective of this new environment.

At this point in time, our new site is still very much in Phase One. We have a lot of new features planned for the site and as we continue to move forward with its development we firmly believe that this new site [just like our new store] will be a site against which others are measured.

As we transition into Phase Two and Three we will also begin to offer additional features such as online purchasing, e-commerce and special orders.

One of our primary objectives with this new site is to offer the visitor more than just a glorified product catalogue. Yes… you will be able to see our various product lines, but we wanted to offer you more.

Of paramount importance to this site is the ability to communicate and engage with our various communities… that’s you. Whether you are a commuter, racer, cycling for fitness, or weekend warrior, we want to be able to offer you reasons to revisit our site for more than just to see what bikes we sell. We truly want this site to become a living community for cyclists and an opportunity for you to gather information, about all things cycling.

Moving forward, we anticipate that this Community Blog section of our site will be dynamic and ever changing. We plan to fill it with the latest news and events from a variety of resources. From the “happenings” with the Toronto Cyclists Union and IMBA Canada… to what’s happening on the Pro Tour and unique stories about cyclists. We’ll try to keep you up to date on information that is relevant to all who ride.

In the meantime, please be patient as we get comfortable and up to speed with this new site and begin to grow its content and features.

Which brings us to you…

… as we get more comfortable with this site and please know that we welcome your feedback, tips and comments.
